Beyond Academics: Essential Skills for University Success
TweetIn addition to academic excellence, students and parents should consider other important factors that contribute to university admissions and a smooth transition to independent living. Things like building independence, broadening world views, and meeting new people are all crucial skills top students have on their applications.
Building independence
You can do this in small ways at home like teaching your child how to cook a few meals, teaching them how to budget their allowance, or helping them to set and keep a study routine. These experiences help them develop a sense of responsibility and maturity, which are highly valued by top universities worldwide.
As for things they can showcase on their applications, overseas residential study programmes provide a flavour of university life and independent living.
Broadening world views
A student with a broader understanding of the world is naturally inquisitive, thinks critically, and possesses empathy. These skills are particularly valuable for those pursuing humanities, arts, or social sciences subjects or aiming to study abroad.
Encourage your child to read widely, watch documentaries, and travel to broaden their worldview. Overseas summer programmes provide a structured way for students to engage with culture whilst also focusing on academics.
Meeting new people
The transition from school to university can be challenging, especially for students who are used to a familiar social circle. Forming new friendships and navigating unfamiliar social environments is a vital skill for all students, but particularly for those who haven’t had much experience interacting with new people.
Summer study programmes, specifically those with a residential element, push students to interact with new people in both learning and social environments. Some may also give the opportunity to experience cohabiting with new people building soft skills like tolerance, negotiation, and compassion.
