Poetry about Family
TweetPoetry is a captivating form of artistic expression that allows individuals to express their feelings and experiences in a deeply personal way. Family is at the core of human experience and therefore has always been an important theme in poetry. ‘Eden Rock’ is a favourite of mine, and it expresses the feelings of nostalgia and relief as the poet, nearing his death, finds solace in the fact that he will be reunited with his family.
It can be read here, where the poet also reads the work aloud.
The speaker’s description of his parents’ idiosyncrasies not only depicts their strong bond but also evokes a sense of nostalgia. Endearing terms such as ‘dear rose’ and the mention of his father’s kiss portray a tender relationship, emphasising the profound effect of parental love on children. The image of the speaker’s parents waiting on the other side and reassuring the speaker that ‘crossing is not as hard as you might think’ evokes feelings of comfort as we see parents’ roles as caretaker and source of comfort.
Poems about family are usually relatable, making them an excellent starting point for those who have yet to find their love of poetry. Here are three to explore:
‘Human Family’ by Maya Angelou
‘Mother to Son’ by Langston Hughes
‘Eating Together’ by Li-Young Lee
